All my life I have been told that our family is related to Nancy Hanks and Abraham Lincoln. So far I have not been able to pinpoint the exact connection.Any help will be apprecatied!
My ggg-grandmother, Susan Stamm Dickerson, b. 1803, Berks Co., PA, m. John Dickerson, b. abt. 1804, (PA?); they married in 1825 in Fayette Co., IL; had three children in IL.:James M. Dickerson, Lucia (Lucy), and Mary ("Alice").Then they moved to Boscobel, WI, and had their last child, Frances J. Dickerson, who is my gg-grandmtoher.
The story was always told that Susan (Susannah) Dickerson (nee Stamm) was a first cousin to Abe Lincoln...or Nancy Hanks..I'll take either one!!
Boscobel, WI., is not too far from where the famous steamboat captain and early Stillwater, MN,became famous for his trips on the St. Croix and Mississippi rivers.He lived in Stillwater for awhile, and then moved to Albany, IL. However, his son, Martin, moved back to Stillwater and lived there until the 1930s All of my father's side of the family: Skramstad and Ricks', lived either in Stillwater or Boscobel.
The "story" we were told is this:
Susan/Susannah Dickerson (nee Stamm), b. 1803, Berks co. PA, was a first cousin to Lincoln through his mother, Nancy Hanks.
Susan d. 1866;
Her daughter, Frances J. Dickerson, was consideredsecond cousin to the Hanks or Lincoln families;
Frances' daughter, Florence Belle, b. 1861, Boscobel, (my g-grandmother, would be third cousin;
Florence married Myron Ricks in Boscobel in 1882; he died in Stillwater in 1923; she died also in Stillwater in 1936.
Their daugther, Gladys Iola Ricks, b. 1894, Mitchell, SD, later married Lawrence Skramstad in 1915 in Stillwater. She died in 1961; he died in 1953.
Their son, Dayle Skramstad, b. 1920 in Stillwater, is my father, and d. 1998.
It would mean a great deal to my family if there could somehow be proven a link between the Ricks and/or Skramstads and the Stamms and/or Hanks/Lincoln families.
Can anyone help, please???
My82-yr - old mother would LOVE to find the connection before it's too late...
