Hello All:
First to respond to the issue of Myles' gravesite - the best source is undoubtedly the book "Graves of Myles Standish and Other Pilgrims" by E.J.V. Huiginn. My copy was published in 1914. However, the investigation and opening of Myles' grave occured in the 1890's.The two young women (Laura/Lora, his daughter, and Mary D. his daughter-in-law) were buried close by -on either side of his body. Also found close by were the remains fo two young boys believed to be John and the first Charles.
The bodies were reburied and then the site marked. Later, the connon were added.
I had purchased tis book (and several others about Myles and the Pilgrims) a few years ago on eBay.
To see a photo of this gravesite - go to the Mayflower website OR, the site: www.Mylesstandish.info
the latter site has several great links regarding Myles and the various theories regarding his parentage.
I read the recent (last year) "Mayflower" and would agree that the author didn't do his home work regarding Myles or just is biased against Myles and the Pilgrims.
He turned me off in the first chapter when he referred to them as Puritans. Any good, competent historian knows that Bradford and the others in Plymouth were Separatists, or even Brownists but definitely NOT Puritans.
As for the DNA testing - we just to to continue encouraging those with the Standish surname to participate it will help us all in the long run.
