It is my pleasure to introduce you to the STAUCH DNA Project. Now I am sure some (or many) of you are thinking this is not for you. Please take the time to read this entire posting, so you can understand how it works, and what my goals are. A website will soon be coming for this project.
Who can participate in this project?
Only males with the STAUCH surname (and any of its variations) can participate. The Y chromosome is tested, and is only passed on from father to son. This chromosome is virtually unchanged for generations, except for mutations, which are not common. This test is not limited to any particular family group or geographical location.
What can you tell from the Y chromosome?
When the Y chromosome is tested, is is checked against others who have taken the test. Matches can be made to determine if another male descends from the same paternal line.
What is involved with this test?
Let me first say that this is not a blood test. Once a kit is ordered, you will scrape the inside of your cheek to obtain the sample. Two scrapes are required at various times, to insure the accuracy of the test. The kit is then sent to the lab where it can be analyzed.
What are the goals of this project?
Several goals can be achieved by this test. I have been contacted by several people claiming that their immigrant ancestor is connected to mine. There is no documentation showing this, so this project can definitely help.
Also, perhaps you have strong circumstantial evidence showing you descend from a specific person. If you match your test results with another person who has documented linage to the same person, you can prove that you are connected.
Remember, the more family groups we have participating, the better. Perhaps someone who does not subscribe to this list gets tested, and finds a match to one of us. We may be able to add another entire branch to our family tree. Also, someone may get tested who has a different surname that that of this project. If they are found to match us, it shows that an adoption likely occurred at some point in time.
This message was intended to give you a taste of this project. It can be difficult to understand, but it gets easier over time. The company I am dealing with gave me a special group rate for kits, which will save us tons of money on kits. I will not divulge prices on the list, but you can email me privately regarding this matter. There are several kits with a variety of prices. The more costly the kit, the more extensive the results.
Feel free to look at the company website, www.familytreedna.com. There is lots of information and explanations showing how this works. Do not use the prices shown on this site, and they are not the group rate I was given. To get the group rate, you will need to get a project number from me.
Also, feel free to bookmark the STAUCH DNA Project page, which includes a brief overview of the project:
