"In Brunswick Co, VA in 1795, Samuel left a document which stated after his death his widow, Jane, and his heirs, Jesse Steagall, Rabun Steagall, and Randolph were to start receiving money owed to them from Moses Pritchett for land he had bought from Samuel." In June of 1795, deed book 22 of Brunswick County, VA, Jane Steagall, widow of Samuel Steagall and Jesse, Rabain, Randolph Steagall, heirs of Samuel sell 50 acres Moses Pritchett 50 acres of land. Is this the document you are referring to? "I would guess that Samuel died in Brunswick Co, VA, but it could have been in Halifax, NC. Does anyone know for sure?" Since Samuel and family are listed on the 1790 census for Halifax County, NC, I would assume he dies in that county sometime before his widow and heirs sell the 50 acres in 1795. "Do any descendants or other Steagall / Stegall researchers know Jane's whereabouts in 1800 or after?" I have not determined if Jane is still living in 1800 and if so her whereabouts. There is a marriage in Halifax, NC of a Jane Steagall to Isham Hawkins in 1817. I have not determined who this Jane Steagall is. Unless Jane is much younger than Samuel was and thus not the mother of all or any of his children, this cannot be the widow Jane "As many years as Sam and Jane were married, one would think they would have had more children than just the three boys, but no other heirs were mentioned in the 1795 deed book." The 1790 census indicates 2 females in addition to Jane. These are named in later documents as Darcus who marries William Cullum, SR and Rebeccah who dies in 1823 in Halifax County, NC leaving a will. "Jane is the lady who was related to the Randolphs in VA ..." I will agree. D M Steagall in his autobiography states that she was of the Randolph family. I have found his statements to be accurate and one would think that he would know about his grandmother, but until this can be proven and we know which Randolph family, it is just speculation. However, the Steagalls and Randolphs did live in close proximity to each other in VA, so this is well worth research to see if a connection can be found.
