James M. Steakley & James C. Steakley
I am looking for any information on these two men.James M. Steakley is living in Fulton County, AR from at least 1850 until 1859.He is found in census records, poll tax records, and land patent records during that time period. After 1859, I have no record of him.He was born in 1825 in TN, and based on the fact that he is living in the household of his brother in law (John Plumley - who married Mary Steakley) it is presumed that he is a son of Christopher and Isabel (Creeley) Steakley.
James C. Steakley first shows up in 1861 in Missouri where he fights for several UNION Cavalry units throughout the duration of the civil war.I have not viewed his military records, but desperately need to know his age as listed on those documents.I next find him in 1880 in Bollinger County, Missouri (not too far from Fulton Co., AR).He is married to Mary Skaggs and has 4 children (his only son dies before adulthood). The 1880 census lists his birthplace as TN, but his age on the census is where my problem lies.At first glance his age looks like 39 (which would make his birth year 1841, and presumably he is a grandson of Christopher & Isabel, although who is his father?).However, I think an argument can be made that his age is listed as 55 (it is not very clear), which would make his birth year 1825, and likely the same person as James M. Steakley.
These are just 2 theories, I'm looking for feedback on information which could prove these right of wrong. If they are 2 different men, does anyone know what happened to James M. Steakley after 1859 and where James C. Steakley came from before the civil war?
