4 Aug 1789 - Bottom was walking around in his corn field when he came upon a black man cutting and eating peaches with a knife.Bottom drawn his gun and ordered the man to walk to Bottom's house, Bottom suspected this man to be a runaway slave. After walking 150 yards the man turned around and grabed Bottom's gun while stabbing him repeatedly with his knife. After about a dozen stab wounds Bottom tried to retreat but the man pursued him and continued to stab him in the chest where blood was gushing out in a large stream, Bottom fell to the ground and the man though him dead and left him.
This black man was a runaway slave, then property of Humphrey Traylor of Dinwiddie Co., VA. and his name was Robin.
Runaway Slave Robin was caught and taken to trial on 31 Oct 1789.Robin was shocked to see Bottom Stegall in court to testify that Robin was indeed the person who who assault him.(Brunswick Co, VA Court)Robin admitted guilt. The judge ordered the Sheriff to hang Robin by the neck until he be dead, dead, dead on 5 Dec 1789.
Robin was removed from court by the Sheriff, he was stripped of his clothing and was "Iron'd up against a wall", exposed to the cold and without fire.He was not fed and looked like a skelleton and was abused by the guards.
On Dec 1 1789 a William Barksdale pleaded to the Courts to give Robin a reprieve. Not a plea for freedom, a plea to immediately hang him so that he would not have to suffer another minute in the conditons he was living in at the time.Even Robin requested immediate hanging to end his fate quicker.
Bottom Stegall himself told the Court that if the Runaway Slave called Robin gets the reprieve that he swears he will put him to death, Stegall being determined that Robin should loose his life!
Robin, runaway slave, guilty of assault with intent to kill, was hanged.
