Hello to All :-) I have a book that was given to my grandmother in 1943 from an elderly woman she had helped take care of in Chicago, Illinois, USA. The book is written in German and seems to be a daily prayer or poem book, each month is printed at the top of the page and dates followed by a poem or prayer. Inside the cover is written: Annie Steinmetz 169 W. 14th St. Chicago Ill. Sept. 30, 1879 on one side and on the other side is written: Ruth Canan (my grandmother) 4/15/43. I checked the 1880 US Census - Cook Co., Illinois, USA and there living at the address written in the book is August Steinmetz, his wife's name unable to read, 14 yr old Annie, 12 yr old Minnie, 6 yr old John and what looks like 1 yr old Teenie. August Steinmetz is a cabinet maker from Prussia.
My grandmother told the story of how the book came to America from Germany and had to be snuck out of the country...I wish I could remember the whole story but I was very young at the time :-( I know it had something to do with the long walk? or something to that effect. The pages of this book are a nice addition to the family's scrapbook and I would love to share this with any descendents of this family or any collectors. I have scanned the cover, inside cover and the first page of each month which I will gladly email.
Also if someone would be able/willing to translate a few pages or if someone can help me with the history of this book I would be so grateful. This was one of my grandmother's few prized possessions and she kept it in excellent condition.
