I have great concerns about Elizabeth Stell being my 2nd ggm. When a find of this type just falls into your lap, after years ofresearch, well it can be overwhelming.
WE *KNOW*, Mary Ann Thornton married John Dallas Davis, Mary Ann lived long enough to see her grandchildren and even some great grand children. She died in the 40s. She tried to tell her grandchildren about herself, but Mom said she just didn't know enough to ask. It was Mary Ann who taught Mom all those old tearjerking folk songs.
We *KNOW* that Mary Ann's parents were William and Elizabeth. We *KNOW* Elizabeth's last name was Still/Steel/Stull/Stell or other phonetic name.
Now to verify just which Elizabeth. Their marriage license was poorly writtten, dark and Elizabeth's last name is almost undecipherable. The next step would be to check matching soundex names.
And then there is Sally HOGG. Mary Ann and Nina Killian pronounced it Hoague, not Hog, which is how Mom passed it on to me, but from my earliest recollection of seeing Mom's research, it was spelled HOGG.
By knowing the names of Mary Ann's siblings, Mom and Elza found them in 1850 Randolph Co GA. 4th Dist page 369 (stamped) enumerated by Sam Andrews, fam/dwel 30/30
