Stephan family in Columbus (Bexley), Ohio
I purchase old photos that have names on the back and try to reunite them with their family.I purchased a lovely 8 x 10 portrait of a family reunion in 1918 or so, and following what I read in the inscription on the back, researched the Herschel family in Ohio.I had no success.
To further the chances of its being of use to genealogical researchers, I recently donated the photo to the Ohio State Genealogical Library, which is now housed in the Metro Branch of the Columbus Library.
Over the Holidays, the librarian there had some time to look over the photo and do some research. The photo's inscription listed the street address where the family
lived. However, no Herschels ever lived there. One day, he noticed an apostrophe between the l of Herschels and the final s.Could Herschel be a first first name?Bingo. There was a HERSCHEL S. STEPHAN who lived at the address and was included in the 1920 and 1930 census'.He sold insurance, according to city directories.
Therefore, Herschel was one of the young boys shown in the photo, surrounded by family at a lakeside reunion. If anyone is interested in more information about this photo, I can forward the e-mails to me from the librarian.I believe that I also scanned the image before I sent it, so I would be glad to forward a copy to any STEPHAN family member.
