The information I had posted seemed to indicate that there were two Giles STEVENS, contemporaries, who were in the same general locations about the same time.I had hoped that it would generate some opinions or additional information that would aid in distinguishing the two of them.I am now inclined to agree with Dr. MATHIAS that the Giles [born c. 1730-1737?] in Dublin Twp., Bedford Co., PA, in 1773 was the one who m. Avarilla PICKETT 1757 and who was the son of Giles (son of Giles and Rebecca) and Alice.I wonder where he was after Oct. 1760 (when his son John was born in MD) and before his arrival in PA by 1773?Did they migrate from MD to VA for a few years?(His parents and brothers had migrated to Loudoun Co., VA.)Also, did he and Avarilla have other children (such as Avarilla and two named after her parents Heathcote and Mary)?Where were they when the 1784 tax list was compiled? What became of them, and did they leave descendants?
The other Giles in Bedford Co. was Giles who reportedly was born in 1747 and who d. in Antis Twp. (Blair or Fulton Co.?) by 11/9/1836.(By the way, was Antis Twp. in Bedford Co. in 1793?)The latter Giles m., possibly in 1767, Nancy, d/o Edward and Jemima TIPTON.Edward was in Barree Twp. by the 1771 tax list (same twp. where Vincent STEVENS was in 1773).
Giles' will, made in Dec. 1835, apparently named his children in strict age order, with the oldest first without separating the sons from the daughters. Those children were Thomas, Jemima, Shadrach, John, Rebecca, William, Vincent (named after Giles' brother?), Jabes, Elizabeth, Sarah and Meshak.I suspect that the first two were named consistent with traditional naming patterns, Thomas after Giles' father, and Jemima after Nancy's mother. From what I remember, it was Mike HORTON who originally had suggested that Giles (who m. Nancy) was a son of Thomas.Thomas STEVENS (b. possibly 1708-1711) was a brother of the Giles who m. Alice; thus, Thomas was the uncle of Giles who m. Avarilla, while Giles (by my theory) who m. Nancy would have been the first cousin of Giles who m. Avarilla.
Thomas STEVENS m. Mary WRIGHT 4/28/1737; their first child was Sarah b. 6/10/1738 in Baltimore Co., MD.I suspect that he was the Thomas who owned land in the Delaware Hundred of St. Thomas' Parish of that county.Listed in that hundred in the 1763 tax list were James, Thomas and Abraham STEVENS.Thomas "STEAVNS" (looks like it could be Stearns) was still in that hundred in the 1773 tax list, along with "Julius" [Jiles?] STEAVNS, whose name appears immediately below that of Thomas. In my opinion, Jiles/Giles was not in the 1763 list because he was not yet age 16, and he attained that age by the 1773 list. Thus, Giles (son of Thomas) was born after 1747 (or possibly in 1747, if he was 16 after the 1763 list was compiled) and before 1757.This roughly agrees with Giles' reported birth date of 1747.(The month/day of the 1763 list is not known; however, a 1692 MD statute specified that tax lists were to be compiled in June or July.)Because Thomas' son Giles was in MD's 1773 tax list, then by default that would be another indication that that Giles was not the one who was in PA's 1773 tax list.
It would appear that Thomas and Mary had children other than Sarah 1738, Vincent (tentative son) c. 1745, and Giles 1747.If Vincent was born in 1744 or 1745, then why wasn't his name in the 1763 tax list?Thomas may have gone to Berkeley Co., VA in 1746 in a "wagon train" of other Baptists with their leader Rev. Loveall; and returned a few years later.Perhaps Vincent lived in VA at some point in his life, including the year 1763?He reportedly migrated in 1773 to Plank Cabin Valley, Barre Twp., Bedford Co., PA, which became Hopwell Twp. in July 1773.He m. Ruth LANE c. 1776; her family were of the Baptist faith and related in many ways with the LOVEALL family (if I remember correctly).
I have tentatively placed Vincent as a son of Thomas mainly because he may have been a brother of Giles (of Thomas).
By the way, my descent is from Mary, d/o Giles STEVENS and Alice/Alce GUDGEON.Mary m. William COLE, s/o John and Johanna.
