Thanks for your suggestions.I'll think about them some more.
Gordon Beach and Lauren Hogan have also posted replies to my query.
Gordon gave me some reference numbers that I used to send off to the Victorian registrar for two birth certificates and two marriage certificates in the Furmage line. I hope that the marriage certificate for Rosa Furmage will get me going again on the Steward/Stewart line. From the index information that Gordon gave me, May Steward was actually registed at birth as May Furmage (her mother's maiden name).I'd been led astray by her death certificate and marriage certificates (which indicated that her maiden name was May Steward) and by some false family rumours. It also appears that her mother was Rosa Furmage (not Rose Furmage). At some stage I'll be wanting to link in with Stewards in whatever country John James Steward/Stewart came from (probably England) and perhaps search an appropriate census.
Lauren Hogan turns out to be a relative and gave me some interesting information about May Steward's family.
Yes.Long ago, I submitted the May Steward and Rose Furmage entries in the Ancestral File in my daughter's name (Gabrielle Hogan) who now lives in Perth under a new surname.
