James STEWARD's father was a James STEWART, bc 1785/90 in Virginia (?). Married to ? (Nancy?) Supposedly in the War of 1812 and a Captain. Came to Indiana by way of Ohio about the time of the War with Mexico. His wife, known only as "Granny", told stories about the STEWARTs and the days when Indians stole white children. She talked about 3 year old Bessie, captured for many years and that James STEWART discovered herand bought with 300 deer skins. He took her home for his parents to raise and then married her at age 17. She supposedly had a locket with the name Candace in it. Children of James and Granny: Henry, James (above), and maybe Nancy and Mary. Nancy supposedly married William FORD and she told about her father being a renown Indian fighter.
