Peggy, this sounds like it is all out of the twilight zone since I've also the will of Elizabeth Willie written 2 Jan 1782 and probated 17 Apr. 1788 where Jesse Peebles was one of the witnesses.
I would tend to believe that this book I have regarding the "Marriages of Sussex Co. 1754-1810" by Knorr was in error if not for you having also checked with Gary Williams. The reason I note this is that there are TWO marriages listed in the name of Jesse Peebles...the first one with Scota dated 8 July 1785 and Surety William Chambliss. Then 31 October 1785 is listed a marriage of Jesse Peebles and Elizabeth Sledge and Surety William Chambliss Jr.
There are also two marriages in this book for the name Peter Cain. The first is dated 21 February 1774, Peter Cain and Judith Tucker, widow of Joel Tucker. The second marriage is also listed in the year 1785 as with the Peebles above:Peter Cain and Elizabeth Powell. Surety Augustine Claiborne. Wit: Hinchia Pettway.
1772 Peter Cain purchased 244 acres in Sussex Co. (Virginia County Records, VII Sussex County. Book No. 40)
1782 Continental Census for Sussex Co. Peter Cain
1810 Census for Brunswick Co. Peter Cain
Well, I have found the marriage of Peter Cain and Scota Stewart.Mrs. Scotty Mitchell married Peter Cain Dec. 27, 1785 in Brunswick Co. VA. Is this what you also show?
I don't know if you are aware but John Cain b. 1741 B'wick d. 1816 m. 2)Celia Jane Mabry 10-31-1798 widow of John Hobbs, Jr. and d/o Daniel Mabry. Their daughter Elizabeth Jones Cain married John Meglamre Whitehorn, brother to my second great grandmother Elizabeth Ann Whitehorn that married David Newsom, son of Nathaniel Newsom Sr. and Susanna Moore. Thus Susanna the aunt of Jemima Johnson who married William Stuart.
John Cain and Celia Jane Mabry were also parents of Celia Jane Mabry Cain b. 10-11-1804 d. 8-11-1884 AR. She married John Graves CHAMBLISS who was born 1807 in Va. Thus, we are back to the Chambliss surname in the first paragraphs.
Then as you are aware William Stuart, son of Wm. and Jemima, first married Temperance Cain May 1, 1817 Sussex Co. and I would love to know her parents.
Lastly, Edward Whitehorn was Surety for the marriage of Ruffin Cain and Polly Whitehorn (Marriage Bond 7 November 1793) and wedding December 4, 1793 by Rev. William Brown.
Edward Whitehorn married Sarah Meglamre Clanton, widow of John Clanton Jr. Edward and Sarah were my third great grandparents.Well, I've written a book!
