I have photocopies of Joseph Merritt's composition book, and also copies of 2 pages found in the Bible of Jefferson Monroe Merritt, his brother. They were sent to me in 1996 by Nancy Merritt Allen. She noted that the composition book was in the possession of Clarice Thompson.A Merritt researcher, Judy Bodenhamer, might know where it is now.I can give you Judy's e-mail address, but not on this forum.
Joseph's book says:"Daniel Duncans wife was Mery Capehart afterward widow Anderson then Duncan reared [--] children."The blank looks like an erasure or a lightly written word that didn't copy well, because there are a few strokes which can be made out.It is a very short word, probably "the" or "her".
I found this interesting entry in Northampton County, NC: William Evatt.April 10, 1758.July Court, 1758.Daughter: Mary Evatt.Wife and Executrix:Sarah.Executor:Daniel Dunkin.Witnesses:Gerard Young.Thomas Wilborn.Clerk of the Court:I. Edwards. (page 116).
Could our Daniel Duncan's wife actually have been Mary Evatt?Sarah Duncan who married Alexander Stinson would have been the eldest daughter, named for Mary's mother.
