I only found out last week that my paternal great-grandmother was a Stirk. Her name was Louisa Elinor Stirk and she married Thomas Austin. She died in Feb/March 1934 in Birmingham, England and was born in 1869.I think I've located her on the 1881 census in Birmingham; her age tied in with how old she was when she died.
I have applied for, and received, her birth certificate, and it shows her mother is Louisa Edwards and her father is Joseph Nathanial Stirk.I believe that he was born on 26th December 1843, and he and Louisa Edwards were married on 13th July 1862.All this took place in the Birmingham area, and I am in the process of obtaining birth and marriage certificates to confirm this.
If this research is proved correct, then the other piece of information I have is that Joseph Nathanial's father was also Joseph Stirk and his (JN's) mother was called Ann.I'm a bit stuck here because on the IGI records there are a lot of Joseph Stirks marrying a variety of Anns.So I'm waiting till I get Joseph Natanial's certificate before I plough on.
I find it quite amazing to think that 2 weeks ago I didn't even know the name of my great grandmother, and now I know that Joseph Nathanial is my great-great grandfather and that Joseph Stirk could be my great-great-great grandfather!!!
Hope this is of interest. What are your links with the name?
