There is no Matthews County in North Carolina, but there is a town of Matthews that is close to the line that divides Mecklenburg and Union Counties. Providence Presbyterian Church and Cemetery are also very close to the county line, but I think they are in Mecklenburg. In the cemetery there are three Stitts with the name William, all with burial dates in the first half of the 1800's. In researching my ancestors there I found that whites and Afro-Americans did attend church together there and Afro-Americans were buried adjacent to the white cemetery. If you like you can either write to the church at 10140 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC or call them at 704-846-1080.
