My grandfather, James Robert Stitt, was born in 1903 in Newark, NJ. I don't have a great deal of background. He was my mother's father, but my mother died in 2002 and she would likely have been the most reliable source. I will fill you in on what little I know, and if I can uncover more through older siblings, I will follow up on this message. James Robert Stitt married Helen Eileen Dunworth (1926, born 10/20/06 in Newark) in Newark. They had two daughters, the elder Beatrice Patricia born (1930) in Newark, and the younger Mary born ca. 1935. In 1932, the family moved to Ventura, California where they resided until at least 1954 (later I would guess). From there James and Helen moved to Columbus, Ohio where James died in May, 1966. James was a career Navy officer and retired as such. I have no knowledge of any of his siblings. I recollect my mother (Beatrice) telling me that the Stitt family line did not go far back for my grandfather. As I recall, James' grandfather was born a Lovejoy (in NJ or PA, I think PA, but not terribly certain either way), but his birth father died before said grandfather was born (or as an infant). James' grandmother re-married soon after her child's birth (or perhaps even before the baby was born), and her new husband (Stitt)immediately adopted James' grandfather and therefore the Stitt name continued into my family. As I have mentioned before, James died in May, 1966 (the obit was written in the Columbus local paper on May 23rd, but I do not have a copy and it is not available online). James' wife Helen died on 10/19/92 in Ventura, CA. James' first child, Beatrice Patricia Hogan (husband Robert Francis Hogan) died on July 2, 2002 in Champaign, IL. James is survived by his daughter Mary who resides in CA. Beatrice was survived by four childrenwho now span the East Coast, and Mary two children in CA and WY.
