Hello!
Clemuel Davis being killed during the Civil War is a true and very well know fact. There are a number of books in Stone Co., MO Library that has references to it.Somewhere there will be an official military account of his death; it will not be near as interesting as the Family tale! You can also check the Stone Co., MO information on this forum it is an excellent site; there might be information there.Contact Mr. Daughtry a volunteer at Stone Co., Library he is very helpful and ask him the best source of facts and information on the Clemuel Davis incident!
Now, the cutting of the man's head and putting it on a fence post would have been in the Walnut Shade area of Taney Co., MO and most likely not related to Clemuel Davis's death.Austin Stockstill wore a set of silver plated pistols and people knew not to mess with him! It was a tale told in the community.Even thought I associated with my cousin Roy Stockstill of Branson all his life; this tale was never discussed. No one with Sir name Stockstill has come forward on this forum and agreed they have heard the story - so you believe it or not!
Taney Co., MO does not have any kind of legal records until 1885!So don't tell me I have to prove the story with legal records!Do you realize Taney Co., MO was one of the most lawless county's in USA before, during and after the Civil War.Billy Stockstill was involved in killing the Sheriff that ended the "Blad Knobbers" reign of terror in the 1880!The trial was held at Ozark, Christian Co., MO the plaques are all over the Court House lawn it is no secret! Billy was accquitted!!
If you will note all the Stockstill boys 6 or 7 served for the USA during the Civil War.All of them came home and raised Families!
