While researching my Sterner Family of Pennsylvania and Michigan, I found an Emma E. Stofflet who married Peter M. Sterner in St. Joseph, Michigan in 1882; they lived in Park Township, St. Joseph County.
I checked census records and found the following:
1870 Census, St. Joseph County, Michigan - Park Township
J. W. Stofflet, age 40, Farmer, b. PA (b. ca 1830)
Catharine, age 37, b. PA
Edna M., age 16, b. PA
Ambrose, age 7, b. PA
Harman, age 4, b. MI
Emma J., age 1, b. MI
Jacob Shaum, age 67, b. PA
Mary Shaum, age 67, b. PA
They lived next door to Solomon Sterner and his wife Angelina (nee Miller), and their son Peter was 13 at the time (b. ca 1856).Angelina Miller was daughter of Peter Miller and Esther, of Centre Township, Columbia County, PA in 1850, where they were next-door neighbors of Solomon Sterner, Merchant.
1880 Census, St. Joseph County, Michigan - Park Township -
John Stofflet, age 50, Farmer, b. PA
Catherine, age 47, b. PA
Frank, age 24, b. PA
Ambrose, age 17, b. PA
Herman, age 14, b. MI
Emma, age 11, b. MI
Charles, age 5, b. MI
Emma, age 19, niece, servant, b. PA
Daniel Reagan, age 20, nephew, laborer, b. PA
Still living next door to Solomon Sterner, now widowed
It appears from these census records that Solomon Sterner emigrated to Michigan ca 1855-57, and John Stofflet emigrated ca 1863-66.
I found the following in Parkville Cemetery, St. Joseph County, Michigan:
Peter M. Sterner, b. 1856, d. 1943
Emma E. Sterner, b. 1860, d. 1940, both on same stone
In a cursory search on the Stofflet name in Ancestry.com, I found:
History of the Lutheran Church - New Hanover, Montgomery County PA - Michael Stofflet - 18th Century
Farm Journal - Eaton County, Michigan (no date) Ambrose Stofflet
Washtenaw County, Michigan History - Stofflet (no first name given), b. Northampton County (assume this is PA)
Christ Lutheran Church - Shoenersville, PA - Wm. Stofflet (Note:John Sterner, Solomon's grandfather, is buried in Schoenersville Cemetery, Allentown, Lehigh County PA, where he died in 1843.Unknown whether these two families knew each other in earlier years).
"History of Northampton County PA and Grand Valley of Lehigh."
Gettysburg, 1 Jul 1863 - Samuel Stofflet, captured, mustered out...
The above data from Ancestry.com is incomplete, as afree search was done, and you need to sign up to get the full story. It's fairly expensive, but worth it for the census records alone.
Hopefully, some of this info will be useful.
