“A Bit Of History---Last Tuesday, Mr. E.M. Stonecypher, of Suwannee, was my guest on my rounds across the mountain. He was especially anxious to see Prof. Haigler at Hayesville, N.C., to whom he and Mr. J.H. Derrick went to school, when Mr. Haigler taught the Burton Schoolin the year 1880. Mr. Stonecypher is 85 years old but Mr. Haigler is 88, but it was rather interesting to hear them chew the rag over what happened 63 years ago, and to see how well they could remember the things that happened, then even in the minutest detail. Mrs. Haigler went to Burton as a bride and she told us how she remembered that she hired a horse from Mr. Stonecypher’s father and rode it back to Hayesville and how wild the horse was all the way there and back. Mr. Haigler told us that the cause for him going to Burton was his acquaintance with the pastor of the Methodist Church at Clayton, Dr. W.H. Weaver. Then he told us the story of Dr. Weaver who started out as a Methodist preacher and then stopped to study medicine and when he had practiced for awhile, returned to the ministry and practiced medicine on the side. He was a pastor of the Methodist Church here during they year of 1880 and probably during 1879. Later he went to Hayesville and conducted a revival meeting, and going home from church, died in his buggy. If I got the story correctly, at that time the Clayton Church and the Hayesville Church belonged to the same conference but I can’t recall what they called the conference. Maybe Mr. Derrick can tell us more about that.”---L.P. Cross, Editor.
