Robert E. Stong, Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at the University of Virginia, 71, of Charlottesville, died on Thursday April 10, 2008 at the Martha Jefferson Hospital after a brief battle with cancer. Bob was born on August 23, 1936 in Oklahoma City, OK, son of Evert E. Stong and the late Mary Alice Stong.
He earned a B.A. and M.A. in mathematics at the University of Oklahoma and a Ph.D. at the University of Chicago. After serving 2 years with the United States Army, he spent 2 years at Oxford University in England on a post-doctoral fellowship and 2 years teaching at Princeton University. In 1968 he joined the mathematics faculty at the University of Virginia, where he taught and did extensive research, publishing numerous papers and a book.
He is survived by his father; his wife, Therese R. Stong; his children, Roger Stong and his wife Phyllis, Richard Stong and his wife Suriani Pokta, Mary Louise Stong and her husband Juergen Steegborn, and Roberta Van Vlack and her husband Matthew; grandchildren, Elijah, Maris, Solomon and Gloria Van Vlack, Clara and Rebecca Steegborn, and Heather, Bob and Lilly Ross.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 3:00 pm on Sunday April 13, 2008 in the Holy Comforter Catholic Church with Father Dennis McAuliffe officiating. Interment will follow in Monticello Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the Mass at the Church.
