Primarily the Straw family I am interested in are from Sutton in Ashfield and as you say Matilda was born in Sutton in Ashfield but as Isaac doesn’t seem to be located after the 1841 census we don’t know what he gives as his place of birth so it was difficult to be sure who he belonged to. However, because there is a Joseph Straw on the 1841 (occupation watchman) and 1851 he says he was born Nottingham about 1808/11 - I followed him through the census etc. On the 1861 census Joseph gives his profession as Earthenware dealer which was interesting to me, as Potter and earthenware manufacture is a key occupation in some of the Sutton in Ashfield Straw families, but maybe his occupation was a coincidence. 1871 he says he is shopkeeper - smallwares 1881 he is Hosiers shopkeeper, Joseph and his wife Ann/Hannah not found after 1881.
Below are from my notes and findings as to how this family are related, I hope it helps a little…
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… The Baptism for Joseph Straw gives his parents as Isaac & Sarah Straw and this is what I believe to be their family.
ISAAC STRAW married SARAH SMITH - 03 MAY 1803- Cathedral Saint Peter, Sheffield
Children baptised to this couple;
IGI C150521- Cathedral Saint Peter, Sheffield ISAAC STRAW - Born 21 MAY 1806, baptised -13 JUN 1806 CATHERINE STRAW – born 27 SEP 1808, baptised - 16 OCT 1808
A possible clue as to the family move from Sheffield to Nottingham between 1808 & 1811 and as Isaac’s profession is given as Smith and Cutler on two of his children’s baptisms and Sheffield was a major steel and cutlery industry
Baptised - Nottingham St Mary JOSEPH STRAW - baptised 10th Feb 1811 - parents Isaac & Sarah, ANN STRAW - baptised 13th June 1813 - parents Isaac & Sarah, father profession = Smith, abode Coal Pit Lane. POLLIN STRAW – baptised 3rd Jan 1820 - parents Isaac & Sarah, father profession = Cutler, abode Pump St. RUTH STRAW - baptised 21st April 1822 - parents Isaac & Sarah, father profession = Coalman, abode Pump St.
Moving on to Isaac Straw & Matilda;
Baptism in Sutton in Ashfield MATILDA THORP – 8th September 1806, mother Mary Thorp
I think she was likely to be MATILDA THORPE who married ISAAC STRAW at Nottingham St Mary – 22nd March 1827.
There were only two baptisms at Nottingham St Mary with parents Isaac & Matilda Straw that I could find…..
Baptisms - Nottingham St Mary ISAAC STRAW – 13th February 1828, fathers profession Higler, abode; Prince’s St, Nottingham. JOSEPH STRAW – 25th October 1829, fathers profession Labourer, abode; Stanhope St, Nottingham.
There are lots of Straw’s buried in Nottingham but these two may be relevant; Burials - Nottingham St Mary ISAAC STRAW – 9th July 1828. abode Stanhope St (entry unclear to be sure of age) SARAH STRAW – 28th November 1832. aged 51, abode Pump St.
It would appear Isaac & Matilda’s other children George, Thirza & Esther were born in Sheffield, their son Isaac is with parents Isaac & Matilda on the 1841 census, given for the born in county? for Matilda and Isaac Jnr it is given as NO -HO107/1336/ 3, Sheffield Park, Sheffield, Yorkshire.
The Hannah Straw mentioned on the 1851 was Matilda & Isaac’s niece and she is with her parents Joseph & Ann Straw on the 1861 - RG9; Piece: 3496; Folio: 21; Page: 1 in Brightside Bierlow, Sheffield and Joseph gives place of birth as Nottingham about 1809, also with them is granddaughter Clara Steel aged 4 who appears to be the daughter of Harriett who married Richard Steel, March-Q 1857.
