This puts a completely different spin on Margaret's life than what I had previously understood. The Tombaugh genealogy (http://www.fulco.lib.in.us/Tombaugh/Family%20Books/Html/Tombaugh%20History.htm) says that Levi Tombaugh married Margaret Strayer, indicating that that was her maiden name. The had two sons, Levi Jr. and Aaron, before the father (Levi) died 8 Dec 1849.I know nothing of any son named John.
Possibly Levi and Aaron were twins, as the birthdate of August 22 is given for both of the boys. However, in one place Levi's birth year is listed as August 22, 1849, while in another Aaron's birth year is shown as 1848.His 1880 census age is 32, so presumably 1848 is correct (except of course that on the 1880 census people were supposed to give their ages as of June 1 -- when someone born in August of 1848 would have still been 31).
In any event, I do not know the place of the marriage between Levi Tombaugh Sr. and Margaret, whatever her maiden name was.Presumably either Indiana or Ohio.
The marriage of Margaret Tombaugh and Adam G. Strayer was in Hancock County, Ohio, 30 Nov 1851. I have no idea why she went to Hancock County following her husband's death unless she had family there. The boys were apparently raised by their Tombaugh grandparents and/or one or more uncles George.(Levi's life sketch, in the Larimer Co., Colo. history, speaks of his growing up on his uncle's farm.)
Is it solely due to her marriage to Adam that she was referred to as a "Strayer"?Or was she possibly also born a Strayer??
