Strayer, Benner, Hankes Miami County Indiana aft 1850
I am getting really confused by all these Benners in Miami County, Indiana in the mid 1800s.My 3rd great grandfather Christopher Hankes’third wife was Catherine Benner.(Christopher was born in 1801 and died in 1875.)They were married in Miami County, Indiana in 1872 and she died in 1877 in Miami County. In the 1850 Miami County census the only Catherine Benner was married to Daniel Benner. She was born in 1817 in Ohio.Daniel and Catherine had an eleven year old son Henry.According to a family tree I looked at her maiden name was Roberts.
One family tree has Henry Benner, son of Daniel and Catherine Roberts married to Mary Jane Hall in Miami County onMay 19 1859.Others have Henry Benner, son of Christopher andSarah F. Mary Jane Hall in Miami County onMay 19 1859.While I never found a Christopher Benner in Miami County, I did find one in neigh-boring Cass County in the 1860 census.Since Christopher Hankes would have been this Henry’s stepfather,I am not sure which is which.
The Henry Benner who married Mary Jane Hall apparently had a son Henry who was born in Jan 1865 in Indiana.Their son Henry was divorced by 1900 as he was living withhis widowed mother.
There was also anotherHenry/William “Henry” Benner who was born in 1864 to William and Harriet Benner.William and Harriet may have been the parents of the William Benner who married Rebecca Strayer in Miami County, Indiana in 1890.
Chris Hankes’ 2nd wife was Lydia Strayer. He was probably a step-grandfather to Rebecca Strayer above.
Questions:
1.Was Roberts the maiden name of the Catherine Benner who married Chris Hankes?
2.What was the name of Catherine (Benner) Hankes first husband?
3,What is the relationship between Catherine Benner’s children and the Benner who married Rebecca Strayer?
Thank you.
Jean
