I apologize folks, I should have looked more closely at Zeke's post before sending my first comment off. I am certainly NOT an expert at this, but I do think that there may be another way to view the census records that Zeke posted. My "hunch" follows:
Sebastian Striegel is my 3rd great grandfather. Zeke's post filled in some gaps for me (thank you very much!), but also raised some questions.
I might be able to add a tidbit to Zeke's research. Sebastian's son Christian says on the 1900 census that he immigrated to US in 1840 and he would have been 10 years old (not 2 as our family had originally thought).
I860 Census shows Sebastian Striegel age 54 m. to Ludgarda age 54 and son John age 20 (born in Indiana) This would be John D.
The adjacent farm shows Sebastian age 32 (possibly Sebastian & Ludgarda's first son) m. to Catherine age 25 (born in Ohio). Their children are: Susan age 7 female (1853 in Iowa) Sebastian age 6 male (1854 in Iowa) George age 4 male (1856 in Iowa) Catherine age 2 female (1858 in Iowa) Christian age 1 female (1859 in Iowa)
These are the same set of children Zeke listed as children of Sebastian (age 63) and Catherine (age 36). I believe it's possible that what's happened is this: Ludgarda has died and their son Sebastian, who was married to Catherine and fathered all these children, has died also. Looks like the grandfather has taken his son's wife (Catherine) and grandchildren under his wing.
Additional information: 1860 Census shows a Henry Striegel age 24 (1836 - the same age as John H.P. son of Sebastian and Ludgarda) m. to Catherine age 22 (1838) with these children: Michael age 4 (1856) Henry age 2 (1858) Clara (female, but unsure of spelling) age 1/12 (Sept 1860) On the adjacent farm is Henry's brother (if my hunch is correct that John H.P. is "Henry"): Christian age 31 (Dec 1829) Lenora age 25 (Mar 1834) William age 5 (1855) Joseph age 3 (1857) Christian age 9/12 a male (Dec 1859)
I will look forward to your comments. Linda Striegel Sherman P.S. Our family has a good picture of Christian Striegel b. Dec 1829 (son of Sebastian & Ludgarda), and a family photo showing Christian with his children and some grandchildren. I'd be happy to share these if anyone is interested.
Here's the copy of Zeke's post that I'm referring to: I am assisting in genealogical research on the STRIEGEL line and have this information which I believe may be for the Sebastian STRIEGEL to whom you refer in your post. Except for the date of birth you give, 1825, everything else seems to fit.
1. Sebastian STRIEGEL. Born in 1807 in Baden, Germany.
Sebastian first married Ludgarda NEMIRE. Born in 1802 in Germany.
In the 1850 US Federal Census for Manchester, Dearborn Co., Indiana, in the household of Sebastian STRIEGEL, there is an Elizabeth NEMIRE, 80. This is probably the mother of Ludgarda. Sebastian STRIEGEL, head of household, is 44 years old. Ludgarda, also born in Germany, is 48.
They had the following children: i.Christian. Born in 1830. ii.Lendelein. Born in 1832. iii.John H.P. Born in 1836. iv.John D. Born in 1841.
The 1870 US Federal Census for German, Iowa, records Sebastian, 63, married to a Catherine, 36.
They had the following children: i.Susanna. Born in 1853. ii.Sebastian. Born in 1854. iii.George. Born in 1856. iv.Catherine. Born in 1857. v.Christian. Born in 1860. 2vi.Stephen (Steve) (1861-) vii.Lucas. Born in 1863. viii.Mary. Born in 1865. ix.Louisa. Born in 1867. x.Alvina. Born in 1869.
I have not yet located the parents of Sebastian STRIEGEL, but if I learn this information, I will post it.
