STRODE line in England and Brittany
Recently I was able to trace the ancestry of my ancestor Margaret STRODE (m George PASSMORE in early 1700s in Pennsylvania) back to England. The family lived for several generations at Shepton Mallet in Somerset near Glastonbury (and its hill, Glastonbury Tor).Earlier generations resided in Dorset, including at Strode, which I take to be what is now called "Strode Manor".
Further back the Strodes had "De" in front of the faily name, and the line goes back to a Warin or Warinus de la Strode who was from Brittany and came across to England with William of Normandy in 1066 (Battle of Hastings). This seems to be as early as one can go, proven, on the STRODE line.
However, I've read allusions to Warin being related to the Counts or Dukes of Brittany and thru them to Charlemagne himself.Does anybody have more definite research findings about Warin's Breton ancestry?Hopefully with proof?
