I am currently working on the STROPE's in Fayette Co., OH, and I have come to some tentative conclusions...
Ward and William are, I believe, sons of Henry STROPE (b. 1765/6, PA), who settled in neighboring Ross Co., OH, by 1830 and died there in Feb 1850 at the age of 84."Manor" is Marion, and his wife, "Misson," is Missouri -- the LDS misread the record.("Inus" is Inez.)If you'll check the 1850-70 censuses of Fayette Co., OH, you'll see that Lafayette and Marion are the sons of William. The Dora STROPE living with William in 1880 is his granddaughter (daughter of his son, Lafayette).Otho/Otha STROPE is the son of Perry STROPE, another son of Henry's.Perry was in the 1840 and 1850 censuses of Ross Co., OH, living next door to Henry in 1840 and next to Henry's widow, Martha, in 1850.Perry then moved on to Macon Co., IL, where he is found in the 1860 and 1870 censuses.(George) Washington STROPE, in the 1840 census of Fayette Co., is also a son of Henry, who moved on to Louisa Co., IA, by the 1850 census.
Ward STROPE married Ethla ORAHOOD on 12 Sep 1846 in Fayette Co., OH.Ward's wife is "Ethla" in her marriage record and on her tombstone; she is "Ethly" in the 1850 census, "Ethley" in the 1860 and 1870 censuses, and "Ethel" only in the 1880 census.
Henry STROPE is almost certainly related to the STROPEs of Bradford Co., PA, who are descendants of the 1710 German immigrant to New York, Johannes STRAUB, some of whom settled in Jackson Co., OH (adjacent to Ross Co., which is adjacent to Fayette Co.), by 1820.
It appears that all the STROPEs living in Fayette Co., OH, at least up through 1880, are descendants of Henry STROPE (1765/6-1850).Henry appears to have had two wives, the first unknown and the second Martha (20 years his junior, which is why I presume Henry had an earlier wife).Without his marriage records, we not only don't have his wives' full names, we don't know which wife was the mother of which children.Henry appears also to have had a son, Stephen, and two daughters whom I have not identified.
