Results have returned for another paper descendant of Jacob STROUP I (1724-1804), of Lincoln [now Gaston] Co., NC, one who descends on this line:
Jacob STROUP I & Maria FRENSCH - Haplogroup I1a ............ _Adam STROUP & Catherine [ALEXANDER/REEL] __Jacob STROUP II & Betsy DILLINGER ___Alexander STROUP & Irene FEWELL ____Walter B. STROUP & Martha P. COUNCIL _____Pvt ______Pvt _______Pvt - Haplogroup J2
This individual is a 12/12 match with the Haplogroup J2 descendant on this line:
Jacob STROUP I & Maria FRENSCH - Haplogroup I1a ............ _Adam STROUP & Catherine [ALEXANDER/REEL] __Jacob STROUP II & Betsy DILLINGER ___Andrew Jackson STROUP & Mary Ellen SMITH ____William Andrew STROUP & Emma Ann RUSSELL _____Arthur Norris STROUP & Anna Louise KISLING ______Pvt - Haplogroup J2
We know that Jacob STROUP I was Haplogroup I1a, so what the match between these two J2 individuals means is that their earliest common ancestor, Jacob STROUP II, *cannot* have descended from Jacob STROUP I.I show this situation graphically on this page:
We don't know, yet, whether this mis-match was caused by an NPE, a "non-paternal event" (i.e., either a hidden adoption or illicit paternity) or whether it is simply a bad paper connection. We also don't know whether the event occurred between Jacob I and Adam or between Adam and Jacob II.Either way, the event affects a great many southern STROUPs because Jacob II had a great many descendants and, of course, Adam all the more so.
If the event is an NPE, it may mean all of these descendants are not really STROUPs, at all.Finding out their "true" surname is not hopeless (I know of at least one successful case of the true ancestor being found genetically), but it's going to come as a shock to a great many people to find out they're not STROUPs.However, I suspect this genetic difference is not an NPE, but may simply be a bad paper connection. The assumption that all the STROUPs in early Lincoln/Gaston Co., NC, were of the same family may be an incorrect one.By the way, we do know (from his signature on his marriage bond) that Jacob II was originally Jacob STRAUB.Like many other STRAUBs, his name was Anglicized to STROUP.I urge everyone descended from Adam to re-examine the evidence connecting him to his father and to his sons. And speaking of his sons...
We desperately need to have someone tested who descends from Adam, not through Jacob II, but through a different son. These test results would establish whether the bad connection is between Jacob I and Adam or between Adam and Jacob II.
