Hi Linda,
My gr-gr-grandfather was William Sturman, Riley's brother.I have recently begun searching my Sturman branch and have been trying to figure out the father Thomas Sturman's ancestors.I came across the 1850 census listing for the family in Greenup, Cumberland, Illinois and the last name was spelled "Sterman".The mother was listed as "Barsheba".I have found some other things on the internet that suggest her name might be "Bathsheba" Corbin. From various genelogy sites, I have come across the family in "Hampshire, VA" and one seems to go back to the 1600's.Hampshire is now in W. VA.I haven't searched any records, yet... this is just internet searching.
Also, the 1850 census lists Thomas as born in Ohio and Barsheba born in VA... most of the children born in Ohio. But, William listed his father born in VA on the 1880 census. If I have found the right family for Barsheba/Bathsheba (her grandmother was Bathsheba) Corbin, her father was buried in Coshecton, OH
Do you have any more on Thomas Sturman/Sterman?
Did you get the military records?I hope you also ordered the pension records... those are most fascinating.
Stephanie
