The April 27, 1940 issue of the AR Gazette published an obituary of Mrs. Eliza Jennie Styers, 75, who died near Mayflower in Faulkner County, Ar. the same day."She was the mother of Solomon W. Styers, killed in action in the Meuse-Argonne battle of the World War, in 1918, and whose body is buried in an American cemetery in France." Because of this, the newspaper referred to her as a "Gold Star mother." The obit goes on to say that Mrs. Styers was born in Ripley, Tenn. on April 25, 1865; that she had lived in Faulkner County 50 years, and was survived by three sons:Joe Styers of Griffithville; Walter Bates of Pittsburg, Kan., and Floyd E. Hughes of Mayflower; three daughters, Mrs. J. W. Lawrence and Mrs. Annie McCormick of Mayflower and Mrs. Lula Carnahan of Minden, La., and a brother, Robet Glenn of Jonesboro.
