In college (many years ago now), I accidentally started researching my surname after I found that the name was incorporated in several cities of ancient Rome (I majored in Ancient history). I was fascinated that it would appear there (Suessa Arunca was one town which was close to what is now Naples; there was also a tribe in what is now Spain named "Suessiones"). Eventually I needed help since I begin coming across books only in latin. But my professor helped me and in the end theorized that these towns happened to go against Rome during the Punic Wars and since Rome won they ostracized these people and they eventually settled north of Italy into where today it is Germany, Switzerland, Alsace-lorraine and France. I seem to also remember that they was a tribe somewhere close to Paris with the surname in it as well. How true this is in fact, is anybody's guess but - it does lend a sense of glamour to the name.
