To the best of my knowledge, I believe my family is from the southern region of Poland. My great grandfather was Francizek Sukala and my great grandmother was Teresa Trybus (maiden name). They settled in the central/western coal-mining area of Pennsylvania around the late 1800s or very early 1900s.Unfortunately, I have no idea of the name of the town they're from, nor the port of entry.Perhaps there could be a Slovakian connection since it's from the same general region.
The other thing to consider is that the original spelling may have changed. While my name is SUKALA, I have also seen it spelled SZukala. There is no way of telling if this is the same lineage but the knuckleheads at Ellis Island couldn't pronounce two odd consonants together so they gave it a phonetic spelling.
Hope this helps. Please feel free to post here on this forum or contact me through my site if anyone has more info on the Sukala heritage. Thanks. williamsukala com
