Gail, here is what I have on Maston's grandparents Henry and Nancy Sumpter.
Modified Register for Henry SUMPTER
First Generation
1.Henry SUMPTER was born in 1830 in Illinois. He died in 1905
in Boles, Scott County, Arkansas. He was buried in 1905 in
Buffalo Cemetery, Boles, Scott County, Arkansas.
Henry married Nancy Janie BILYEU daughter of unknown BILYEU
on 17 May 1846 in Washington County, Missouri. Nancy was born
in 1829/1835 in Arkansas or Missouri. She died on 14 Feb 1920
in Boles, Scott County, Arkansas. She was buried in 1920.
According to Derssie Sumpter's notes, Nancy was rumored to
be 1/2Cherokee and 1/2 French, Nancy's name was spelled
various ways including Blue, Belew, Bileyu and Bilyeu. It
is suspected that Bilyeu is the correct spelling. Family
stories say that Nancy was raised as a witch or healer and
wasn't to marry until after she was over twenty years of
age. She was married to Henry Sumpter in 1846 at Washington
Co., Mo.Henry was a farmer and hunter in Missouri. Then
they moved to Crawford Co.,Arkansas, ca. 1880, after the
census was taken. They moved to Boles,Scott Co., Arkansas.
Henry died there in the year 1905 and is buried at the
Buffalo Cemetery near Boles. Nancy lived until 14 Feb 1920;
her death certificate says she was 110 years old and died
of old age and TB. Her grandsons have said that she was a
midwife and healer and would saddle up her horse any time
day or night that someone came for her help. She
could remember things that had happened over a hundred
years before 1910, so most felt she was closer to 120 years
old.
