Sutherland's of Newmarket, Ontario
In the late 1990's, my sister Rena Singleton posted this quieryand at the bottom of the page, I posted a follow up to her work
John Sutherland was born in the Selkirk Settlement near modern-day Winnipeg, Man., Canada, a son of John Sutherland and Margaret McBeath. This family were among the early pioneers (1837) of Scotch Grove, IA. He married Caroline Espy and had eight children, six of whom were still living in 1922. Here is Caroline's obituary from the Monticello Express, Feb. 2, 1922:
Passing of Caroline E. Sutherland
Caroline Espy Sutherland, the widow of the late John Sutherland, died at the home of her daughter, Anna Hanna, in Monticello, Tuesday, January 31 at 4:30 p.m. after a lingering illness of several years' duration.
The funeral services were held at 10:30 o'clock this morning, being conducted by Rev, Mr. Elges of Springville, a former pastor of the decedent who had for years been a warm personal friend of the family. Burial was made in the Scotch Grove cemetery beside the grave of the decedent's husband.
Mrs. Sutherland (nee Caroline Espy) was born in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, September 30, 1843, hence she was over 78 years old at the time of her death. She was brought by her parents to Jones County, Iowa, in 1850 and made her home with them in Scotch Grove township, where she continued to reside for a period of about seventy years. She was married April 19, 1871, to John Sutherland, who had an honourable record as a soldier in the Civil War. He had enlisted as a sergeant in Co. D 9th Reg. Vol. Inf as early as August 19, 1861, when nearly two hundred able-bodied men of Scotch Grove volunteered, and marched south to battle for the maintenance of the republic. He was wounded at Pea Ridge, promoted to first lieutenant, March 1, 1863, later wounded at Vicksburg, and not discharged until January 2, 1865, thus having to his credit nearly four and a half years of active service. Mr. Sutherland died September 8, 1901.
Mr. and Mrs. Sutherland became the parents of eight children, two of whom died in infancy. The survivors are Thomas, John, Margaret, residents of Cedar Rapids; Charles of Chicago, Frank of Center Junction and Mrs. Anna Hanna of Monticello. All of these children were able to be present and do honor to their mother's memory at her funeral, today. Mrs. Sutherland is survived by five grandchildren. Of her father's family, which was a large one, there is only one survivor, Robert J. Sutherland of Indianapolis, Indiana.
Mrs. Sutherland united with the Presbyterian church of Scotch Grove, at the age of 14, and retained her membership therein until her death. She was interested in the church -- for all that it stood for, and in the solace, comfort and hope it brought to those who sought, through it, the everlasting way of life. She did much, she, her pastor, Mr. Elges, and others in securing the endowment fund which now furnishes an income used in caring for the churchyard, where lie those who cleared the forests of Scotch Grove, and prepared the way for those who live there now. She never lost her interest in her neighbors, nor did she lack that wider interest that embraces humankind wherever they may be. This was shown in the work she did, in her quiet way, in the solitude of her sick room, in the preparation of comforts for the soldier boys, during the Great War.
Mrs. Sutherland reared her family well, and she lived to see her children honoured and influential members of society, doing the world's work in an earnest and responsible manner. What better can be said of any mother? Her work was faithfully done, and may there be "laid up for her a crown of glory".
FOLLOW UP
SUTHERLAND BROTHERS, merchants. This firm conducts a large general
store on Main Street, where a flourishing business is done. It is composed
of James, Alexander and William, who are the sons of the late Mr. Donald
Sutherland. The latter was born in the County of Caithness, Scotland, in
1815, and in 1840 emigrated to Canada. He came to York County, and
was first employed by Mr. William Fraser, of East Gwillimbury Township.
Two years later he removed to Schomberg, and took charge of the mill of
the late Thomas Brown. After a few years experience there he decided to
go into business on his own account, and accordingly came to Newmarket,
and leased the Coster mill. At the expiration of three years he returned to
Schomberg, and rented the mill formerly owned by Mr. Brown. On the
completion of the Northern Railway, Mr. Sutherland came back to New
market and purchased two mills, the only existing ones in the village, which
he operated for many years. He began store-keeping also, and after a time
entered into partnership with Mr. Burns, which continued some time, when
serious losses by fire compelled them to break the connection, and for a
period suspend business. Mr. Sutherland, however, commenced in the
mercantile business, which, with the assistance of his sons he carried on for
a number of years. Failing health eventually obliged him to retire from
active employment, and his sons energetically continued the concern.
Mr. Sutherland, senior, held numerous offices in connection with local govern
ment, prominent among which may be mentioned the first Reeveship of
Newmarket. He was also a member of the School Board, and his abilities
being recognized, he was also made a Justice of the Peace. He was also a
License Commissioner, and subsequently became chairman of that body.
He was married in 1847 to Jane Boddy of Lloydtown, by whom he had
seven children. He died in November, 1880.
