My Welsh grandmother's maiden name was Svombo. Her grandfather, Nicholas, came from Greece, probably the island of Hydra, but the name Svombo is not Greek; I understand that there is no 'B' in Greek. I can only assume that the family came from elsewhere and then amended the surname to fit the Greek pattern. It became Svobo / Svompo (+ female or male endings). Here in the British Isles, the versions are: Svombo, Swombo, Swambo. I wondered if the original name might have been Svoboda. Does anyone have any thoughts on this, please?
