Andrew Jackson Swart is my G-G-Grandfather. He was born Dec. 16 1836 to Phillip and Asenah Swart (Walton). "A.J." as he was known was one of four to enlist and be accepted in the 12th Penn. Vol. Inf. shortly after the firing upon Ft. Sumter by the CSA. He was married to Mary Jane Greenlee on Oct. 31 1861. After his 3 month sevice in the 12th P.V.I "Jack" (another nickname) volunteered for sevice in the 140th Penn. Vol. Inf. During the battle of Gettysburg he received a leg wound which made the use of crutches necessary for the rest of his life. A.J. had four daughters, Florella, Viola, Minnie, and Anna Mary (My Great Grandmother). A.J. was educated at Waynesburg College and made farming his lifelong business. Andrew J. Swart died July 23 1899 in Amity Penn. and is buried in the Protestant Church Cemetary in that place. To see a photo of A.J. Swart taken during the Civil War visit http://home.att.net/~j.r.bernmanhttp://home.att.net/~j.r.bernman
