An Anniversary
Hi all!
I've been looking in on this board for some time now and its been interesting to see all of the different directions the family research is going and where all of Garrett's descendents are living now.
I recently found an Iowa-based website of another family (coincidentally named the "Garretsons") whose family history incudes an account of the sinking of the Prins Maurits in 1657.It seems one of their ancestors was a shipmate of Garrett's and their website includes some accounts of the shipwreck.
(the URL is: http://www.garretson.us/index.phphttp://www.garretson.us/index.php)
I live in Iowa as well, and finding the descendents of those shipmates living so close is pretty amazing.According to their account, the Prins Maurits left the port of Texel, Holland on her last voyage on December 21, 1656 - 350 years ago today.
My Swearingen lineage is Garrett/Thomas/Van/John/John/ Daniel/Abraham/Daniel - the last Daniel (Daniel J, my 3GGF) settled in Oskaloosa, Iowa in the early 1840's.And for those of you familiar with the HBO Series "Deadwood", Daniel is the father of Ellis Albert Swearingen (Al later moved to Deadwood, SD and founded the Gem Theater - both are featured in the series).I've done quite a bit of Deadwood research.
So Al Swearingen is my great great granduncle - and Marmaduke Swearingen is his great great granduncle.Looks like both are getting a lot of recent attention, long after their deaths.I wonder if Garrett could have imagined what his legacy would be as he left the Netherlands so long ago.
