A part of my Swift family were living in Westminster at the 1881 census but the two youngest children were born in Croydon. Edwin John Swift was born there in 1867 and his brother Francis Rhodes Swift in 1869. Three other children were born in Westminster, Mary Emily K.S. Swift 1861, James Beaumont Swift in 1863 and Lina Ann Swift 1865. It would seem that the family removed from Westminster to Croydon about 1866 but were back in Westminster (10 Bernard St)by the 1881 census. It could be that they had two homes or perhaps the wife went to her relatives home to deliver the youngest children. The parents names however were James Swift and wife Selina, James was christened at St Martin In The Fields, Westminster on January 14, 1819, the son of James Platt Swift and wife Ann Carpenter (married 1810 at St Andrews, Holborn). James had a brother George ( christened Sept 21, 1825 at St Martin's) his wife was Charlotte and among his daughters was Emily b 1860, Jane b 1862 and Frances b 1868. Wife Charlotte came from Rochester, Kent. b 1833. They were living in Camberwell, Surrey at the 1881 census. The brothers James and George were in the printing trade with their father James Platt Swift. Do you think that this is the family you are looking for ?? Ralph S. Swift.
