Hi Harlow,
I got in late, but had a great weekend.
I went to the site you suggested, I will have to go back and sort through it.Thanks for the link.Although I have always been trying to figure this stuff out, I really didn’t have much until I got Ancestry.com last year.I have only just gotten back far enough to look for my Swift connections.Other than web searches (where I have found nothing) and census records, I'm starting to figure out what to do next and how to find out what historical books and societies there are or where I might find more information.Back as far as 1850 I have handled pretty well, but before that … ?I don’t know how to find records in Massachusetts (or anywhere at that early date).
What I have:
My father was Joseph Clarke Atherton, Jr, b. Dec 12, 1925 IL
His father was Joseph Clarke Atherton b. Mar 09, 1901 IL
(For them I have the birth and death records and all the census records.)
His father was Charles Daniel Atherton b. Aug 25, 1848 MA
(I have all of his census records and am waiting on a copy of his death record)
His parents were James Munroe Atherton b. Nov 20, 1817 MA
and Phebe Freeman Swift b. May 19, 1817 MA
(I have all of their census records from 1840 until their deaths)
Phebe Freeman Swift was Gustavus Swift’s cousin, that’s what brought her son Charles Daniel to Chicago. When Gustavus started Swift & Co., Charles headed the Swift & Company Police Department.
I believe I have found the 1840 - 1860 census records for Thomas and Temperance Swift in Sandwich, MA.If I have the right ones, then Phebe is listed both with her parents and her husband (James Atherton)in 1850.If in fact this is the right record, then Phebe’s siblings are:
Mary, Thomas C,Seth(?) F,Temperance C,Eliza E,Sarah D,George W andAbby P.
