On looking through some old handwritten (and difficult to decipher)notes on the Chesterfield, Derbyshire Swifts I came across the middle name YATES and though it appears not to have a relevance to your search one has to pose the question "why?" The note reads " Joseph Yates Swift born 1st July 1866 at Christ Church in the Colony of New Zealand". Unfortunately the parents of Joseph Yates Swift are James Swift of Melbourne in the Colony of Victoria (born 11 th July 1828) and his wife Mary Chambers (born 31 March 1831 in Ecclesfield) of Richmond, near Melbourne, she was the daughter of Thomas Chambers formerly of the parish of Ecclesfield,England.
The parents of James Swift (1828) are John Swift(b 12Dec 1796) of Chesterfield in Derbyshire and Mary Fretwell? b. 20 Oct 1793 in Chesterfield..
Here's one for you Grady. Slightly earlier in this lineage there was a James Swift of Chesterfield (b 27 Jan 1769) and married to Joanna Amory of Sheffield, baptised at Sheffield on 14 Sept 1770. Their fifth child was Elizabeth Swift who was married to John LOY. No further details but the sibling senior to her was William Swift born Feb 1804 so all things being equal , Elizabeth was probably born circa 1806/7 and married around 1826. It was this family that in the next generation obviously moved to the colonies, Australia and New Zealand. John Swift 1796 who married Mary Fretwell (?)was Elizabeth Swifts elder brother.
Regarding Jonathan Swift (the author), anyone descended from the Rev William Swift of Hanover VA (1696)can claim a relationship to that well known writer,Jonathan,, not directly of course because he died unmarried in 1745 (or so it is thought). But Rev William of Hanover's family descended fromthe Rev Thomas Swift(1595-1658) of Goodrich and Bridstow in Hereford and his wife Elizabeth Dryden whose third son Thomas married a daughter of Sir William Davenant who had a son, yet another Rev. Thomas(1665-1752) and who was Rector of Pattenham in Surrey, England.
This Rev Thomas (1665-1752)is mentioned as the cousin to Jonathan Swift who went to university in Dublin andstarting the same day 24 th April 1682. Rev Thomas and wife(name unknown) had children William b. 22 Jan 1696/7(Rev William Swift of Hanover), Davenant 1701, Godwin 1705, Dean 1706, Ann 1709. All this can be found in IGI.
To find the Canterbury, Kent connection we have to go back beyond the Rev Thomas (1595-1658) and wife Elizabeth Dryden. The father of Rev Thomas (1595)was the Rev William Swift (b 1566) of St Andrews, Canterbury and married to Mary Philpott. The father of Rev William (1566)was the Rev Thomas Swift, collated to St Andrews, Canterbury 1566 and married to Margaret Godwin the daughter of Rt Rev Thomas Godwin DD, Bishop of Bath and Wells.
