My name is Govind Sanyal, my father is from India and my mother Estelle Swinton is a of Native American descent born in Georgetown S.C. in 1903. My Native American ancestors were erroneously categorizewd as Free People of Color in Georetown S.C. My earliest ancestor was known as Scipio Swinton on the 1830 census and was refered to as Skipper Swinton on the 1840 sensus for Georgetown. My early Swinton ancestors had married into the Knights (Nights),Puckham and Britt families, all with traceable indigenous origins. My Swinton family along with some of the above families atrtended the Prince George of Winyaw Chorch where they were listed as Free People of color in the early 1800's. The historian John Reed Swinton stated that this early community consisted of mix bloods who were referred by the surrounding community as Waccamaws. Please do inform me if there is a tradition of native American blood in your Swinton family from Georgetown or do you connect with the early Swintons who were classified as Free People of Color or mulatto. The term mulatto was used often to denote any mixture with Indian in early S.C.
