Symington-Simonton DNA Project Update
As of September 1, 2004 we have 10 people indicated in the Simonton-Symington DNA Group at Family Tree DNA. Of this one test is in Process and it is Ian Symington from England-Scotland. One test was from a Symington from Australia and it showed the ancient Ancestry was Viking and this test does not match any of the other completed Tests. Five (5) of the Tests were from Simonton’s-Simanton’s who descended from US Simonton’s. These five on a 25 marker test had EXACT MATCHES ON ALL MARKERS which would indicate a common Ancestor within 9 to 14 Generations. So far there are Two different family lines that are also documented. Three tests are from known descendents of Theophilus Simonton who came into Lewes Delaware, relocated to Conostoga Manor, Lancaster PA and then the family ALL moved to Rowan Co. NC. The other test from a documented line is from Robert Simonton who located in Somerset Co. New Jersey and then moved to Mr Bethel PA and then the family scattered, mostly to western PA and on into Ohio. We also have one Descendent from a Simonton whose oldest known Ancestor was in Eastern Ohio and western PA in the early 1800’s. This person is working on documentation to connect to one of the known Simonton lines.
The fact that we have 5 tests with a perfect match is quite rare and very exciting as we know that DNA identification does work to show positive and negative relationships. The Origin of the 5 who match show western Europe as an Ancient Heritage which is very normal.
There are 5 separate known lines of Simontons who came to America in the early to mid 1700’s not yet tested. These are John Simonton from South Carolina, Adam Simonton from Western Ohio, Andrew and William Simonton from Maine, and William Simonton from Dauphin Co. PA and John Simonton from Preble Co.Ohio. There may have been others that have not been yet identified.
THEORY- It seems that all of these lines with Spelling along the lines of Simonton-Simanton, Simington all variations like this came to America from North Ireland. What has been determined is that in 1630 a John Simonton acquired 1000 Acres in North Ireland. There were on the Hearth rolls in North Irleand three Simontons found so far and one was a Adam and the other two were both John Simonton. Adam and one John were in Tyron, Ulster Ireland and one in Antrim, Ulster Ireland. The information is very scarce from Ireland.
The DNA results however suggest that all of the Simontons who came to America had a COMMON ANCESTOR probably around 1600 or later. With this procedure, where there is a Gap in Documentation but Circumstantial information suggest a family tie, the DNA test will show there is a tie or if there is not. This can only be accomplished by Male Simontons from the Un tested lines to come forth and have a test made and by this method there can be evidence that there is a Connection or there is not. As the Group Administrator of the Simonton –Symington Group I ask the various Researchers in the several lines of Simontons and all of the researchers in the Symington Lines to join in this effort to prove the General Knowledge that exists as to the origination of the Symontoun-Symington-Simonton families( note many other spellings exist) which is believed to have occurred in 1306 in Lanark Scotland with the first Symontoun being Richard Dicson, of the Dicson-Keith-Douglas families of Scotland.
I ask that all of the descendents on the various named spelling to assist in this effort and as we gather more tests from various lines of this family that has spread throughout the World, there will be interesting knowledge gained. This will hopefully assist in the up coming 700 year Reunion of the Symington-Simonton descendents in Lanark Scotland being organized by Ian Symington from England.
