Taillefers in England between 1066 and 1256
Hello Taillefer researchers,
I was looking for the history of the name Taillefer and found everyone's comments very helpful and thought I would pass along this interesting note about Taillefer descendents in England between 1066 and 1256 (when Hanger Taylerfer is found in Kent).
I have been trying to find the earliest references to the surname BURGES(S) in Cornwall.Although Burgess is thought to be a name that comes from a title I wondered if an early Burgess might have adopted the name of a place. And I recalled that there is a manor in Cornwall called Borlase Burgess.
So I looked at the reference again and then found a website for a place called Pendeen (head man's place in Cornish) and found some very interesting notes on the BORLASE or BORLAS family. It seems that these people were descendents of the Lord Taillefer who accompanied the Conquorer.Borlase of Treludda in Newlyn, Cornwall possessed a diploma granted to him by William II (William Rufus) that granted him permission to assume the name BORLAS(E).This had to have happened some time before 1100 but it seems that this descendent of Taillefer had already styled himself BORLAS de BORLAS.Perhaps the document was just confirmation. But on this webpage, it is stated that the ancestor of Borlase was TAILLEFER.
This may account at least for some of the Taillefers between 1066 and 1256. There's a few more interesting notes on the Borlase family on the webpage;you can find the webpage by doing a search for BORLASE BURGESS.The title of the page is St. Just in Penwith. Some of you may already have this information but thought it might helpful for someone out there.Thank you all for your interesting notes on the earlier history of the name.
Lucijane
P.S.Families have regularly changed their names during England's history and that makes them very difficult to find!
