Hi Colleen, Glad to hear you joined our Chilton Polden group. We can carry on the conversation there if you like. Although so far we have not connected your Tapscotts to our Groves in Chilton Polden nor to our Tapscotts in Catcott, they probably are related somewhere along the line. Also that Cox family you are looking maycome from Catcott and be related to some that we are looking at, as in the 1881 census, William G. Cox gives his birthplace as Burtle (Catcott): 1881 NameRelation Marital Status Gender Age Birthplace Occupation Disability William G. Some of the children in the 1901 census confirm that this is the same family. As to where William really was born, that is a good question. I did not find in my CDs of the 1851 census of Somerset and Gloucester, but will look around elsewhere when I get a chance. There were a couple of Williams about the right age in Weston Zoyland, Taunton, and Lyng, but no connection seen yet. I also note a William Cox the right age was christened in Meare: Cox 22 August 1841 William Vicarage John Cooke Rosanna Harriett Curate Meare from http://genealogy.colinrayner.org.uk/http://genealogy.colinrayner.org.uk/
However there are several other possibilities: there were Cox families in both Mark and Catcott Burtle at the time. Was he born in Edington, and is he this student William Cox:COX, WilliamG.S.9 ScholarEbrington /Ebr 61(CD3)? Was he missed? Is his age wrong, and is he William Cox in 1841: Sarah Cox 30 Ag Lab Somerset
William Cox 11 Somerset
Stephen Cox 7 Somerset
Sarah Cox 5 Somerset
Louisa Cox 3 Somerset
Catcott HO107/964/ 23R All appear to be in one house ?
and again in Catcott Burtle in 1851: 42 COXSarah49 Widow/er House Servant Edington, Som. William 20 Ag. Lab. Catcott Burtle, Som. Sarah14 Catcott Burtle, Som. Louisa 12 Catcott Burtle, Som.
Unfortunately I am not working on the Catcott film at the moment.
But from the various censuses, it does appear that there are connections between Cox families in Mark, Burtle (Catcott), Meare, East Brent, etc. and obviously William G. Cox was living at South Brent in 1881, next to several other Coxes who may be relatives.
The best way to sort a whole bunch out is on film of the village church registers, but you could get the civil registration of William G. Cox from the Family History Centre films or the British government PRO if you were inclined to spend a bit, and solve it that way I suppose, before choosing which villages to get out. See you at the Chilton Polden group!
