I am looking for the parents of a wife of my great grandfather. She was Dorothy "Dot" Tarter, daughter of Mrs. Frances Tarter. According to her gravestone in Pinedale Cemetery, Sublette County, Wyoming, she was born 12 March 1878 and died 25 July 1952. She married and divorced Wilford W. Luce after 1891 (when he married another woman) and before before 1898 (when he remarried). I have not been able to locate either a marriage record or a divorce record.
I have only one reference to her, from a local history: "In March of 1906, Mrs. Dot Luce (daughter of Mrs. Frances Tarter) and her daughter, Mable, were on the horse-drawn mail stage from Daniel when it left Fontenelle headed for Opal. The team played out in deep snow midway between Fontenelle and Graham's ranch at Slate Creek. Dot Luce and her daughter had to remain out all night in the stage, while the driver took one of the horses and rode on to Graham's. There he telephoned back to Fontenelle for a relief team to rescue them. Judge Holden sent out a four-horse team that picked them up around 10 a.m. the next morning."
Mable Luce, the daughter mentioned above, might have been the Mabel M. Luce, born 18 February 1892 in Wyoming and died 29 September 1961 in Sonoma County, California.
Also from a local history: "[Huguier V. Cleophas] built a cabin by Tarter Island south of Big Piney [Wyoming] which the Tarters moved into in 1889."
Frances M. Tarter, presumably the mother of Dorothy Tarter, appears on the 1910 census at Pinedale, Wyoming, living alone.
I suspect that Dorothy Tarter was a sister of Nannie Tarter, who married Henry Philetus Catlin on 21 January 1890 at Big Piney, Wyoming.
