Years ago I was asked if I was any kin to Richard Tauber, a famous opera singer of the 30s and 40s.
Richard was a tenor from Vienna, Austria. He was famous for love songs sung in German referred to as "Tauberlieder". When the Nazis came to power, he thankfully saw the writing on the wall and escaped to England where he was well received. He died of heart failure in Londond in 1948.
Anyway, at the time I searched record stores all over for some of his recordings and found none. (This was before the advent of the internet.) Finally, a record store in Edinburgh, Scotland found two in a catalog and sent them two me. When I got the cassettes with his picture on them, I noticed a family resemblance. He had the same bulky frame as my father, a widow's peak, a prominent forehead, deep set eyes, large nose, large ears and a cleft in his chin. Not exactly handsome, but quite distinguished looking.
