For those interested in the family of John Taylor who was said to have been born at "Pennington Castle" in Cumberland County, England in 1607 and came to Virginia 1637-1648, I pass on information which I have obtained from the genealogy research service of the Cumbria Record Office, formerly Cumberland County, England.I was impressed by the thoroughness of their research.
These are some of the pertinent parts of their report to me:
"The Pennington family left Pennington parish ...in about 1242 and established an extensive estate around Muncaster Castle. However, a thorough search of the Muncaster parish registers (which date from 1585) revealed no Taylor baptisms, marriages or burials before 1622.In that year there was a burial <11 Sept 1622: Elizabeth Taylor> after which there were no further Taylor entries before 1791! Clearly then, the Taylors did not come from Muncaster and therefore, Pennington Castle could not have been the one in Muncaster".
As to whether the reference was to Pennington parish and not Pennington Castle, the researcher wrote: "Pennington parish registers have only one Taylor entry in all the time between 1612-1702: a baptism in 1673.Sadly, the surviving registers only date from 1612 but, even so, there are no entries for any of John Taylor's children born in the 1620s and 30s".
However, the researcher went on to point out that heraldry records ("Cumberland Families and Heraldry" by Huddleston and Boumphey) show that there was a Thomas Taylor in Carlisle earlier.Their reference stated:
""le Taylor of Carlisle. This family rose to prominence just before 1500 and soon afterwards removed to London, where they recorded their arms in the 1568 "Visitation".Before the close of the 16th centiury they had settled in Suffolk.Arms. Sable a lion passant Arent. Crest. a lynx Proper".
The researchers went on to say that a document listing the Freemen of the City of Carlisle, dating from 1612, included no Taylor. What this all means is that the local records in Cumbria County, England (in which Carlisle is located) do not reflect that a John Taylor was living in that area in the early part of the 1600s.
If anyone has more information on where in England the John Taylor, born 1607 who came to Virginia before 1648, came from in England I would like to know about it.
