It is so good to know that others are taking an interest in continuing the research on the TEEL/TIEL/THEIL/DIEHL family of Catoctin Manor, Loudoun Co., VA!While much progress has been made over the past 50 years in reconstructing the families in each generation, much research remains to be done, particularly in the court, land, and tax records in Virginia, and in the registers of the Evangelical Church of Esslingen, Neckarkreis, Wuerttemberg.
There are several concerns regarding the family of the immigrant, JOSEPH DIEHL (DIEL), baptized 5 August 1699 at Esslingen, and died before 27 April 1785 Catoctin Manor, Lovettesville, Loudoun Co., VA, not the least of which is span of over 20 years between the estimated birth of his first and last child. This would suggest to me the possibility that he may have had more than one wife.
Another concern is a possible error in the estimated year of birth of HENRY TEEL (TIEL, DIEHL), who died in late 1812 in Blount Co., TN.His year of birth has been calculated from the following record: Loudoun Co., VA deed dated 08 Apr 1762 from Charles Earl of Tankerville of Great Britain made a lifetime lease of a tract called Catoctin Manor containing 100 acres to JOSEPH TEEL, aged 62 years (b. ca 1700). His son, HENRY TEEL aged 13 (b ca 1749) and daughter, MARY TEEL, aged 16 (b ca 1746) or the longest liver. I have not seen the original document, but suspect that there's a possibility that the above age of HENRY TEEL was misread, and that he was more likely 18 instead of 13.This would correct his year of birth to be circa 1744, a more probable year to be the father of a first child ["Chrissy" or Christina] whose date of birth has been tentatively set as 1766.
Finally, the custom of naming children after uncles as well as forbears not infrequently leads to difficulty in correctly identifying in which family a person belongs. This is not an impossible task, but a tedious and time-consuming one which demands the collection of all records pertaining to each individual under consideration, and then a comparison of the data, letting the records speak for themselves, and coming to a tentative conclusion from the preponderance of evidences gleaned.
The father of the immigrant, JOSEPH DIEHL, identified as GEORG DIEHL in the Esslingen church registers, married ANNA CATHARINA BOCHER, daughter of GEORG BOCHER, on 7 February 1682.The paternal grandfather of JOSEPH DIEHL was SEBASTIAN DIEHL who married MARGARETHA WEIGEL 12 September 1659 in the parish of Esslingen.Extant church registers for the Evangelical Church at Esslingen begin in 1565 (baptisms and marriages; deaths/burial records begin in 1569).There are some gaps in the records. The church registers are available on microfilm for research through the LDS Family History Library, Salt Lake City, UT.Just as in this country, genealogical research in Germany demands work in all available records. To restrict one's research to the church registers alone is unwise.
