Notes for JOHNATHON JOHNSON TEETZEL:
[Teetzeladd.FTW]
The following information was received from Margery Steinsvoll, who received it from Beverly Teetzel, of Shedden, who lives in the old Waugh homestead that was built in 1888.This was taken from an interview in January of 1984.
It all began when Jonathan Teetzel, who was born on August 22, 1795, in Grimsby Township, married Miss Mary Lawrence at Grimsby in 1817.As soon as he was married he applied to Colonel Talbot for land in Southwold Township and was granted 200 acres on the north side of the Talbot Road (now Elgin County Road #16) on lot 22 in 1817.This lot is the lost east of the present Fingal Cemetery.
Jonathan and Mary Teetzel became the parents of 12 children.Jonathan Johnson, as he was fully known as, was a stone mason and farmer until his
death .He lost his first wife in 1855 and married again, this time to a Mrs. Caughell.
Notes from Bruce Teetzel's website - December 1999:
- Lived Sussex County, New Jersey, 1795 - 1800
- Grimsby Township, Lincoln County, Upper Canada - 1800-1817
- Lot 22 N.T.R., Southwold Twp., Elgin Co.., Upper Canada - 1817-1873
- Jonathan Johnson Teetzel fought in the War of 1812 attached to Flank Company of the 4th Regiment of the Lincoln Militia. His military service helped in obtaining his farm at Fingal, which he obtained from Colonel Talbot in 1816.He visited his 200 acre farm in the Talbot Settlement in the fall of 1816 when he built a log cabin and planted some wheat, before returning to Grimsby. He was married to Mary Lawrence on January 1, 1817,and taking all of their possessions and household effects on a sled, which was drawn by a yoke of steers, they started out on their honeymoon to Fingal.Fingal is about 100 miles west of Grimsby. He was a fine Christian gentleman who was well known for his kindness and honesty. He was a consistent Methodist, but had a cant towards the Seventh Day Adventists, known as the Millerites. He had morning and evening scripture readings and prayers and was loved and honored by all who knew him.He kept bees and could go among the bees unmolested without wearing anything on his head or hands. At swarming time he would put a light gauze over his head, but nothing on his hands.Six years after his wife died he was remarried to a lady from St. Thomas, Abigail Caughel. His son, Charles Lorin Teetzel, took over the family farm until well into the 1900s.He died of inflammation of the lungs and kidneys during an illness of about 3 weeks.Dr. James McLaughlin attended.
