Coenraedt TenEyck b/ca 1616 in Moers, Bavaria (now Moers, Germany)--- (the immigrant) was named a "Schepen of the City" of New York (Freeman of the City)...apparently something of an honor for a tanner and shoemaker albeit one who had made himself rather wealthy. I have seen transcriptions of the "lists" which the mayor would put out every six months or so with the names of those named Schepen of the City, but still do not know what it means. (Also I had the date of his being so-named, but cannot now find it - if anyone has that date I would appreciate it greatly!)
I do not know exactly what that honor implies? Does it mean citizen? Was it a guild of wealthy businessmen, was it like the Rotary Club? Or has it to do with no longer being a "subject" of the Patroon?
